Learn About Storing Wine Properly

Wine is a picky, high-maintenance liquor that lets you know if you have been treating it wrong or neglecting its needs. When you cater to its demands, you get to reap the rewards of its great flavor, obvious texture, and amazing quality. If you toss that wine into one of your kitchen cupboards for use at a later date, you aren't going to experience a drink that is nearly as spectacular as if you had stored it correctly. You can learn about the importance of proper wine storage and other things to know in case you decide you would like to take your wine drinking to another level and become a real honest-to-goodness wine connoisseur.

Storing in your own wine cellar

If you have your own wine cellar, then you are off to a good start. However, you'll need to do some work to make sure it is going to be the right home for your wine collection. Your wine cellar must be cool. Temperatures between 48 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit are good for just about all types of wine. While most cellars naturally offer these temperatures most of the year, if you live somewhere hotter or colder than the average, then you may need to install a heating and cooling system for the wine cellar. It's important to never allow extreme temperature changes to occur quickly.

Make sure you black out any of the windows that may be in the wine cellar, as you aren't going to want your wine exposed to UV rays. Also, be careful of regular lighting, such as from ceiling lights or lamps. While they won't directly ruin your wine, they can eventually fade the labels on the bottles, and you won't want this to happen either.

Storing wine in a climate-controlled storage unit

If you don't have the means to store your wine at home, then you can store it in a climate-controlled storage unit. By storing your wine in a storage unit, you won't have to worry about trying to keep it at optimal temperatures somewhere in your house. You can also free up space in your home. Also, you will be able to add more to your collection because you won't have to worry about not being able to accommodate its best interest and trying to find space for it.

You want to choose a climate-controlled unit that allows you to put in all the wine shelves you need to store your wine sideways. You also want the facility to be close enough to you that you can go to the unit any time you want to take a bottle or even to add one to your collection.
